Working offline and how sync works
Tree Atlas saves your work on your device first. It then uploads it when you have signal. You do not need to press anything for this to happen.
What works without signal
These are saved on your device, then uploaded when you are back in signal:
- trees
- photos
- measurements
- tree notes
- site notes, typed or voice, and editing or deleting one
- voice notes on a tree
These need signal for now:
- satellite maps
- address search
- looking up and creating a new site
- signing in on a new device
To use a site's map without signal, save it before you go out. Go to Me, then Device, then Offline maps. Offline maps save the OS map only. Satellite imagery still needs signal. A site needs a boundary before you can save its map.
How sync works
Each tree, site and note shows a small mark:
- On phone: saved on this device and waiting to upload.
- Uploading: on its way now.
- Failed: the last try did not work. See A survey is stuck in Failed.
- Decide: someone else changed the same record. You choose what to keep.
The sync chip at the top of the screen shows the same thing for the whole device, for example Offline · 3 waiting. Tap it to open the upload queue.
The iPhone, iPad and Android apps carry on uploading in the background. In a web browser, uploads only run while Tree Atlas is open. Keep it open until everything has uploaded.
See what is waiting
- Go to Me, then Device.
- Tap Upload queue. The row shows how many items are waiting, or Up to date.
- The queue lists items under Needs a decision, Uploading, Waiting and Failed.
- To send them now, tap Upload now. If something has failed, the button reads Retry all.
You can also tap Save what’s on this phone as a file. This saves every item in the queue, with photos and voice notes, to one file that you keep. Nothing is removed from the device.
If the subscription has ended, the queue shows Uploads paused. Your work stays on the device and uploads by itself when the subscription is active again.
